Dr. Goldstein Provides Charitable Eye Care

Every year, Dr. Goldstein is approached by local organizations, asking if he will assist in providing charitable eye care to patients who cannot afford insurance. Over the years, Dr. Goldstein has provided free or reduced-fee eye care, including examinations, surgery, and has even worked with local hospitals and surgery centers to provide their services under the same terms.

The Story of Terry R

The most recent beneficiary of Dr. Goldstein's kindness is Terry R. This man is 52 years old, and has been unemployed for the last 3 years. And it is not because there isn't a job waiting for him, he simply could not see well enough to perform his daily tasks.

"Doctor, I Need Surgery...Can You Help?

Without work, there was no health insurance, and without health insurance he did not think he could afford surgery. In fact, when Mr. R asked his original eye doctor about this, the surgeon told him it would be $5000 up front! There was no way he could afford this, and Mr. R found himself in a terrible position: He could not see well enough to work, and without a job, could not afford health insurance, or to pay for surgery!

Enter the Eagles Club

Mr. R was lucky enough to approach the Eagles Club for help. The club motto is "People Helping People", and they went to bat for him. They approached Dr. Goldstein with Mr. R's story, and the immediate response was "Of course we can help!".

It All Comes Together

Mr. R's surgery was performed at the Truvista Surgery Center in Troy on March 8, 2011. Dr. Goldstein helped arrange a reduced fee for the use of the center and its staff, and also donated his time and skills. One day later, Mr. R already has good enough vision to drive, and plans to start back to work in the next couple of weeks!
