Bladeless LASIK FAQ

Femto LASIK or bladeless LASIK is among the latest ocular laser technologies developed for patients who are unable to see without the use of contact lenses or glasses. This procedure is effective for people suffering from all kinds of eye disorders-long sightedness (hypermetropia), short sightedness (myopia), age-related long sightedness (presbyopia) or astigmatism.

Femto LASIK essentially involves two lasers. In the first stage, a tiny flap is created by the surgeon in the eye cornea. This helps in preparing your eye for the upcoming stage i.e. vision correction. Bladeless LASIK FAQ are frequently asked questions about bladeless Intralase LASIK.

What is the difference between a traditional LASIK surgery and Femto LASIK surgery?

The key difference between the two LASIK procedures is that while the conventional LASIK approach requires the use of a mechanical blade for making the flap, the Femto LASIK method creates the flap with the help of the femtosecond FEMTO LDV laser. This means that the entire procedure is blade-free and the surgeon can customize it as per the unique requirements of a patient.

Femto LASIK procedures increase the safety and comfort to the patient along with and precision and high-quality technique.

How does it work?

The Femto LASIK method works on something known as the ‘photo-disruption’ principle. It involves the use of infra-red laser energy which created in an accurate pattern of tiny, overlapping spaces right beneath the cornea surface. This laser operates at a very high speed with each pulse lasting for one quadrillionth second!

These high-speed laser light pulses help in breaking down the tissue of the cornea at the level of molecules each femtosecond. There is no generation of heat or interference with the surrounding tissue. As the laser is passed over the patient’s eye, a completed flap is incised in the eye’s cornea. After the flap gets created, a special surgical tool is used for tilting the cornea up and Excimer laser is utilized for reshaping the patient’s cornea for correcting the eye problem/s.

Advantages of Femto LASIK

The Femto LASIK procedure is quite short (just takes a few minutes) and has minimal impact on the patient’s eye. It is also painless and quite comfortable for the patient. There is no need to fix the patient’s head for the procedure. Some of the most severe eye probles can be corrected with the help of Femto LASIK. For example, it is suitable for patient with thin corneas or extreme myopia. The laser energy utilized in Femto LASIK is approximately 100 times lesser as compared to other lasers. Hence, it causes no inflammation.
