Trulign Toric Lens Implant

Advances in lens implant technology continue to make it more likely that patients will be able to free themselves from glasses after cataract surgery or relex surgery. The newest lens available in 2013 was the Trulign Toric Lens Implant. Dr. Goldstein was the first in Michigan to implant this lens. Due to his extensive experience  with its precursor, the Crystalens™ implant, his success rates are excellent.

Astigmatism must be corrected

Patients who undergo lens implant surgery want to decrease their need for glasses and contact lenses. There are two issues that need to be addressed to make sure that these patients are seeing well without correction. Nearsightedness and farsightedness must be corrected to as close to zero correction as possible. Astigmatism can still force patients to need glasses. This is because it causes two points of focus inside the eye. If astigmatism is not dealt with, vision will be blurry at distance, intermediate and near unless glasses or contact lenses are worn. This can be accomplished using Laser Cataract Surgery, toric lens implants or a combination of the two.

Toric Intraocular Lenses

There are a few different brands of lens implants available to correct astigmatism when the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced. This can occur during cataract surgery, or during ReLEx surgery in patients who want to be more independent of glasses. The main shortcoming of these lenses are  that they still leave a patient dependent on reading glasses.

Trulign Toric Lens Implant

The Trulign Toric Lens Implant is built on the same platform as the Crystalens® implant by Bausch and Lomb. This lens implant is placed in the eye in the same way as any other lens implant, but it is made to flex inside the eye. This flexing power allows a gradual focusing power. Patients may gradually gain intermediate and near vision with this lens implant. To summarize, the Trulign Toric Lens Implant can:

  • Be placed in the eye through a small incision, like other lens implants
  • Correct astigmatism to allow sharper vision without glasses
  • Flex to give a natural range of focus in the intermediate and near ranges
