Choose a LASIK Surgeon Who Pioneered the Procedure

LASIK surgery has been used as a mode for laser vision correction for many years. The first laser vision correction surgeries were performed in Detroit in the mid 1990’s. In those early days, the equipment was very rudimentary, relative to the currently used technology.

Dr. Goldstein was in the first group of LASIK surgeons trained to perform LASIK surgery, and has continued to provide the finest care to his patients. Every patient sees him for every visit to the office, and he performs all surgeries himself. This type of personalized care is rare in the eye care field. Patients who are seeking a highly skilled, personable LASIK surgeon in Detroit have always been very happy with their care in his hands.

First, there was PRK

Laser vision correction was first performed as PRK (photo-refractive keratectomy) surgery. The first cases locally were done at Sinai Hospital, and Dr. William Goldstein was involved in the early research on these patients. Initially, only patients who were not candidates for radial keratotomy were considered candidates for surgery. With this surgery, the top surface of the eye, the epithelium, was manually scraped or removed with the laser. Next, the cornea was reshaped using the same excimer laser to treat the nearsightedness and astigmatism.

The laser used was the original VISX laser, now owned by AMO, which has now become the most used laser for laser vision correction in the United States.

Evolution to LASIK Surgery

Within a couple of years, it became evident that there was a better way to accomplish the goal of laser vision correction. The marriage of photo-refractive keratectomy and keratomileusis led to the creation of LASIK. LASIK means Laser Assisted Intrastromal Keratomileusis. The laser used is the same as the one used for PRK (the excimer laser), but a flap is created on the front of the eye first. The laser is performed, and then the flap is replaced. There is almost no discomfort after surgery, and the vision is very good within a couple of hours. By the next day, almost all patients can drive themselves to the office without their glasses.

Dr. Goldstein provides the best LASIK surgery to his patients. His results are among the best LASIK results in the country, and his complication rates are extremely low due to his careful approach to surgery. His happy patients tell their stories if you click here: Happy Patients.
